Inquiry

The students have been enjoying our new space for Inquiry. Everyone is working in small groups to prepare a presentation about something to do with Space.

Cinema T.V anyone?

Today Mr H worked very hard to install our new T.V! It wasn't an easy job and required him to put a few bits of wood here and there to make it secure. It is the biggest T.V in the school and measures about 70 inches! How lucky are we? :)

A big thanks to Mr H for all his hard work and everything he does to make sure our class spaces have everything they need.

Space - What do you want to know more about?

This afternoon the students got into groups to research something they were interested in about our Space Topic. This included Moons and unknown planets, Venus, Pluto, International Space Station, Supernova, Blackholes and Wormholes!

We were also very lucky to get our first T.V in the new space. This is portable so we can move it around to different parts of the room.

Science - From Asteroids to Zero Gravity!

This term for Science are topic is Space - From Asteroids to Zero Gravity!

Yesterday we shared facts about our current knowledge of things related to 'Space'. Each student was asked to share one fact and also come up with a question they are interested to know more about. This is called our Wonder Wall - at any stage, students might like to research this question and add their facts to the booklet.

Today we started tuning and and sharing some more things we knew about the Sun, Earth and the moon. We are currently waiting for our TV in the new learning space, so in the meantime the projector will come in handy!

What happens when you love maths...

Today in problem solving, the students had to find out the area of a football pitch and how much spray was needed to cover it. It wasn't an easy question and it really got the students thinking!

Here is Jordan and Vaibhav working hard in their lunch hour to get an answer - twenty minutes in fact! Awesome enthusiasm boys.

Handshake Market!

This afternoon our students competed in the Handshake Market! Students were either buyers or sellers. Buyers had the blue cards and sellers had the red. Students had to negotiate a price with the person they were buying or selling from. Buyers wanted to buy their card for as little as possible, sellers wanted to get as much as possible!

Here is a time-lapsed video of what it looked like!

Economy

In Navigators 3 we have been looking at the economy. So far we have covered interest, tax and today we have started looking at supply and demand. While we do not encourage students to spend their entire lives on devices a small amount of time on the above app may expose them to buying business's and some important economic ideas. Fully at parental discretion of course!

What are our taxes used for in St Martins neighbourhood?

Each student received a Google Map of our local area. They had to mark examples of places which taxes are used e.g public parks. We talked about the Government and the Council and how the taxes support out local area... e.g. roads, footpaths, planting of trees, power poles, libraries.

Bartering Time!

This afternoon for inquiry we discussed the different forms of money society has used. This included shells, cocoa beans, gold, silver, coins and paper money. More recently, we talked about the use of cheque books, Eftpos cards, PayWave, Apple Pay, PayPal, Pay Later and Bit Coin!

The students got into groups and were given bartering cards. The requirements were...
- enough food for everyone in the group
- shelter
- essential items required to live.

The cards included chickens, cows, fishing rods, water, trees, logs, seeds, tools and more!

Below, Hamish is writing about how we can use the sheep, chickens and cows

INQUIRY - Money, Money, Money

Today the students got into groups and were given a scenario -

What would a family of 4 or 5 spend $1000 in a week? What expenses would they have?

The students had to get their thinking caps on and brainstorm all the different expenses and how much they might cost. We only started to share, but here is what they brainstormed so far...

Mindfulness Time

Today we had our first session of mindfulness. The students came in after eating time and had an opportunity to lie on the floor, close their eyes and do some deep breathing. They did this while listening to an audio from a programme run by Smiling Mind. For more information about their programmes click here. This is a great opportunity for the students to calm down, do some deep breathing and reset themselves for the afternoon.

Feedback from the students...

'I actually felt like the bubble was in it's place.'
'It is really relaxing and makes you feel kinda sleepy.'
'Your eyes wanted to stay closed for a wee minute.'
'All your muscles relax and you can't feel them until you open up your eyes.'
'All your thoughts are gone and you feel like aaaaghh.'
'Sometimes it's hard to think of only one thing, but with this you had to.'

Korfball!

We had our first session of Korfball today. Lots of fun was had this morning as the students learnt a new game. It is similar to netball where you can't step. However, you don't need to be three feet away when you're defending!

INQUIRY - What is a Global Economic Community?

Today we did a brainstorm with the students about the question - What is a Global Economic Community? This was quite a challenging task and the students really had to get their thinking caps on! They all had an opportunity think about this individually, recording their ideas in their book. We then sat down as a group and shared out ideas as a class. Some valuable discussion was had and it got the students thinking! We are looking forward to unpacking this further in the coming weeks.

What do I know?

What do I want to know?

BANQER - Interest and Tax

Last week we introduced Banqer to the students. Each week they will receive a salary of $300. They can also earn money for class jobs, doing awesome work, having a great attitude and showing our school values.

Just like in real life, the students are expected to pay weekly expenses e.g. use of classroom resources and WIFI, which will cost them $60. The students have an everyday account as well as a savings account to encourage them to think about savings and interest.

Today we looked at tax and interest - what is it and why? We discussed what our taxes pay for, such as public parks, schools and hospitals. The students learnt about interest and how this can be compounded. Lots of new things to learn but it's a good start!
